What is the best way to integrate hydrogen into the energy system? / Wie lässt sich Wasserstoff in das System der Energiewirtschaft am besten integrieren?

To integrate hydrogen into the energy system, we need a strong focus on sector coupling. At the very least the hydrogen and electricity systems can be coupled by integrating electrolysis based on renewables at the right locations with underground hydrogen storage and hydrogen-powered electricity generation. This sector coupling coupling can be extended for example, to the heat sector (make use of excess heat from electrolysis and H2-power-generation) and the natural gas sector (hybrid power generation).

In addition to this stronger system focus on sector coupling we need to further strengthen demand-side stimulation. Supporting the uptake of hydrogen by end users will encourage the rest of the value chain to follow suit. We also need a clear de-risking framework for investment in underground hydrogen storage, which has a long lead time compared to the rest of the value chain.
